Made in China

So people are freaking out about products made in China. From food to toys, and clothing. People are probably concerned about food the most, as it is directly related to health. To be honest, I started to realize that I am also concerned about it more than I thought I would be.

I ran out of strawberry jam, and yesterday when I went to supermarket I found that there are jams made in China, Japan, and Egypt (??? I didn’t know Egypt exported strawberry jam!). Jams from China are cheaper than those from Egypt, and ofcourse… the ones from Japan are the most expensive. For the same price, jams from Japan are 1/3-1/2 in net weight. But I chose jams from Japan anyway. I was considering to buy the one from Egypt but then again… it’s still safer to buy the one from Japan (I think?), albeit at a higher price.

The same thing happened again today… when I saw a bottle of honey in a store in Ginza. Pure honey on sale, really cheap. But then I read the label… it’s from China. Nope. I returned it to the rack. I know… terrible! I am probably worried too much but it’s hard not to be.

Safety has been a big issue for developing countries exporting food to developed countries. Lots of things to do to meet the proper standards, and most developing countries lack the institutions to get these things done. For the sake of China and developing countries in general, I hope this problem will be solved soon. Ganbare!
